Physical Therapy

Seeing physical therapy at hospitals, multispecialty clinics, and other medical organizations makes physical therapy seem like a complementary modality. In reality, physical therapy is a stand-alone medical system, and a number of articles published in physical therapy professional literature emphasize the importance of physical therapy examination, instead of relying on other medical professionals’ evaluations. While physical therapy, just like other medical professions, are based on modern knowledge of anatomy and physiology, physical therapy has its own system and methods, and at the Advanced Holistic Center’s Downtown physical therapy and Miami Beach physical therapy locations we believe in giving our physical therapists most freedom, not only because they deserve to maintain their professional integrity, but also because our patients will  benefit most when physical therapists are allowed to conduct the entire evaluation and treatment, the way they were told at school. Just letting physical therapists do their job the way it is meant to be done can raise the quality of treatment outcome as well as creating more effective collaborations with other medical professionals.

What Injuries and Conditions Can Physical Therapy Treat?

While physical therapy specializes on diagnosis and treatment of diseases and injuries of muscles and joints, mostly using exercises, but physical therapists’ job extends further. About 9% of all emergency room visits are related to physical therapy one way or another, and many hospitals keep a physical therapist on staff in the emergency rooms. In addition to treatment of patients who suffered a physical injury or those who recover after a surgery, physical therapy can also be used to prevent physical injuries and enhance physical performance. Generally speaking, physical therapy can help relieve pain, improve mobility, increase the range of motion of joints, and provide gait aids. It can even help patients who suffer from Parkinson’s disease or headaches, but to be sure physical therapists need to conduct their own evaluation. (Pain, for example, can be referred, and the physical therapist needs to establish the pain’s true origin using physical therapy examination.) At the Advanced Holistic Center’s Downtown physical therapy and Miami Beach physical therapy branches, physical therapists have all they need to provide high-quality care to our patients on an individual basis.

Pilates for Rehabilitation

Pilates is widely known today as a form of physical fitness, but Pilates can also be effective in rehabilitation. Research studies have been conducted to investigate the effectiveness of Pilates in the rehabilitation of low back pain, ankylosing spondylitis, multiple sclerosis, post-menopausal osteoporosis, non-structural scoliosis, hypertension and chronic neck pain, and while Pilates demonstrated at least some degree of effectiveness in each of the studies, research suggests that Pilates can be effective at improving various outcomes, but it shows particularly high success rates at improving pain and disability levels. Pilates can be even more effective when it is combined with other methods, and at the Advanced Holistic Center’s Downtown physical therapy & Pilates and Miami Beach physical therapy & Pilates branches, we try to make treatments as comprehensive and holistic as possible, but the specific therapies or their combinations may be best typically depends on individual patients and their circumstances, so our therapists choose and combine different modalities after at least an hour-long conversation with each patient and then modify the treatment’s elements as it may be needed as it progresses. The Pilates instructors at the Advanced Holistic Center’s Downtown physical therapy & Pilates and Miami Beach physical therapy & Pilates branches design programs for various fitness levels.

Can scoliosis be corrected with physical therapy?

A recent article published in the journal Pediatric Physical Therapy reported that physical therapy scoliosis-specific exercises “resulted in significantly less curve progression compared with controls” in teenagers with scoliotic curves between 12° to 20°. After skeletal maturity, however, success rate decreases, but physical therapy can be an effective method for preventing the scoliosis from becoming worse, and the improvement of the symptoms associated with scoliosis have a lot to do with the patient’s lifestyle as well as the type of work that the patient does. At the Advanced Holistic Center’s Downtown Miami and Miami Beach locations, however, the physical therapists are trained and certified in the Schroth method, which according to research findings has better clinical effects than conservative physical therapy, although, an article recently published in the scholarly journal Clinical Rehabilitation, the success rate in the treatment of scoliosis was greater when patients do exercises under physical therapist’s supervision, rather than by themselves at home. Also, many case studies report successful elimination symptoms associated with scoliosis, such as back and hip pain, and the ability to manage muscle soreness even patients in their 60s.
